Commemoration of International Menstrual Hygiene Day – Kibera, Nairobi Church of God, Laini Saba | 31st May 2025

In recognition of International Menstrual Hygiene Day, HKSAI held a successful Menstrual awareness and sanitary pads distribution event at the Church of God, Laini Saba in Kibera, Nairobi, in collaboration with Amref University Amref International University, local schools, NGOs, and healthcare practitioners. The event brought together 163 girls and young women from the surrounding community to raise awareness on menstrual health, end stigma, and promote safe hygiene practices. The event began with an overview of the HKSAI thematic program led by Chris Isindi. Ms. Esther, from NCCG, provided an educational talk on menstruation. She covered essential topics such as the menstrual cycle, types of sanitary products, hygiene practices, and when to seek medical attention. She also demonstrated using pads, tampons, menstrual cups, and reusable alternatives, explaining their suitability based on flow. Notably, she also addressed the issue of period poverty, encouraging girls not to engage in risky behaviors to access sanitary products and instead seek support from HKSAI, a registered organization, and government offices. The event featured engaging student performances, including poems and songs that reinforced the day's messages and encouraged a positive attitude toward menstrual health. Ms. Faith, a psychologist from Amref University, was accompanied by her students. She focused on menstrual hygiene, self-confidence during menstruation, sexual health education, and the importance of reporting sexual abuse. She also shared guidance on maintaining genital hygiene and avoiding harmful products. After the educational sessions, the HKSAI team distributed two packets of sanitary towels to each of the 163 girls in attendance. This practical support, combined with the knowledge shared, aimed to empower girls in Kibera to manage their periods with dignity and confidence. These events mark a significant step in promoting menstrual health and supporting the rights of girls and young women living in informal settings. #MenstrualHygieneDay #PeriodDignity #EndPeriodPoverty #GirlsEducation #HKSAI #KiberaGirls #EmpowerHer #MenstrualHealth #DignityForGirls #HealthEducation #AmrefUniversity #AmrefKenya #deliveringhope
