Preparations for the International Day of the Girl Child in Final Stages as Uasin Gishu County Set to Host National Celebrations
The preparations for the International Day of the Girl Child are in high gear, with HKSAI working closely with the Uasin Gishu County, Civil Society Network, Department of Social Protection, and other development partners to ensure the event is a success.
The International Day of the Girl Child, observed worldwide every October 11, was established by the United Nations in 2012 to highlight the unique challenges girls face, advocate for their rights, and promote their empowerment and development.
This year’s celebration is especially historic as it coincides with the 30th Anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (1995) the world’s most comprehensive policy agenda for advancing gender equality. The anniversary provides an opportunity to reaffirm Hope for Kenya Slums Adolescent Initiative and the Kenya’s commitment to empowering girls and recognizing their vital role in shaping the nation’s future.
Through collaboration, the Uasin Gishu County will host the national celebrations. Civil society actors, local leaders, and government agencies have been meeting frequently to finalize plans, mobilize participants, and coordinate activities.
Speaking during a planning meeting, Chief Officer for Gender and Social Protection, Marion Birgen, expressed optimism:
“Most of the logistic arrangements are already in place. The county is ready to host this event, and we are confident it will be both memorable and meaningful. This day is not only symbolic but also a reminder to listen to girls, amplify their voices, and create opportunities for them to thrive.”
The celebrations are expected to draw participation from government representatives, educators, civil society organizations, and young people. The activities will spotlight the resilience of girls, celebrate their achievements, and call for urgent action to dismantle barriers that prevent them from reaching their full potential.
By shining a spotlight on the plight and promise of girls, this year’s commemoration underscores that empowering girls is key to building stronger, a more resilient communities and a brighter future for all.
