HKSAI with Andolo Community Rises for Environmental Clean-up

Community Unites Against Waste

Andolo, Kibera – In a powerful display of community spirit and environmental commitment, residents of Andolo, in collaboration with HKSAI and local partners, undertook a comprehensive cleanup initiative.

This vital effort tackled persistent issues of illegal dumping, clogged drainage systems, and poor waste management that have long plagued the area, contributing to flooding, environmental degradation, and public health risks.

A Day of Action and Awareness

On April 20, 2026, a dedicated team comprising HKSAI staffs, over 100 community members, and local business owners converged on Andolo. The day's activities were meticulously planned, beginning with a mobilization and safety briefing to ensure all participants were prepared for the tasks ahead.

Teams were then dispatched to address specific challenges: removing accumulated waste from an identified illegal dumpsite near the bridge and along river banks, manually clearing silt and debris from drainage channels, and sweeping primary footpaths and lanes to restore public cleanliness.

Strengthening Ties: Leadership and Organizational Support

The initiative saw an unprecedented level of support from various local organizations and leaders, underscoring the collective importance of environmental management. Representatives from the Office of the Area MCA and Area Security were present, providing essential advocacy and ensuring the event's smooth execution. Their presence highlighted the critical link between community action and local governance.

Furthermore, several key organizations stood in solidarity with HKSAI and the Andolo community, including:•Andolo CBO and Atlas CBO, who were instrumental in the physical cleanup.•Weather MTAANI, providing their weekly weather focus to help the community prepare for seasonal changes.•SITE 1, KDI (Development Initiative), and Umande Trust, all of whom contributed their expertise and resources to the day's success.

The event’s Organizing Secretary, Machunia, expressed gratitude for the support received from individuals, community members, partner organizations, and other stakeholders. She appreciated their participation and contribution toward activities that promote a clean and healthy environment in Andolo and the wider Kibera community.A representative from Weather MTAANI also encouraged community members to make maximum use of the newly cleared environment for beneficial purposes. The representative urged residents to protect the cleaned areas, avoid dumping waste at the cleared sites, and work together to ensure that the spaces remain clean, safe, and useful to the community.

HKSAI Reaffirms Commitment to Vulnerable Adolescents and Girls

During the event, HKSAI Operations Manager, Willis Mulaa, addressed the community forum and reaffirmed HKSAI’s commitment to supporting vulnerable adolescents and girls in Kibera. He emphasized that HKSAI continues to empower young people through education, mentorship, life-skills development, and technical skills training offered at the HKSAI Training Centre.

Willis Mulaa speaking during the event

He encouraged parents, guardians, community leaders, and young people to take advantage of these opportunities, which are designed to help adolescents build practical skills, improve their livelihoods, and create a better future.Willis also called for stronger and continued collaboration between HKSAI, community members, local leaders, businesses, and partner organizations in future environmental clean-up activities across Kibera. He noted that maintaining a clean and safe environment requires collective responsibility and regular community action. He urged residents to continue working together to prevent illegal dumping, keep drainage channels clear, and promote proper waste-disposal practices. Through sustained collaboration, the community can create a cleaner, healthier, and safer Kibera for children, adolescents, and all residents.

Beyond Cleanup: Fostering Sustainable Practices

The initiative extended beyond mere physical cleanup. A crucial component involved door-to-door and group sensitization sessions.

Residents and business owners received vital information on proper waste disposal practices, the importance of maintaining clear drainage, and the detrimental effects of open dumping. These sessions also served as a platform to share information about HKSAI's programs and services, encouraging community engagement and access to support.

Tangible Results and Future Aspirations

The immediate outcomes of the cleanup were significant.

The illegal dumpsite was successfully cleared, primary drainage channels were freed of major blockages, and communal areas were visibly cleaner. Perhaps most importantly, there was a marked increase in community awareness regarding waste disposal best practices, with several business owners pledging to improve their waste handling.Despite these successes, challenges remain.

The limited availability of waste collection and transport resources for immediate removal of all collected waste highlighted the need for ongoing logistical support. However, the momentum is building, and the community is already looking ahead. The next cleanup event is scheduled for October 10, 2026, promising to further the gains made during this initiative.
